A Message From the Principal
It's hard to believe, but our seniors have just over three weeks left, and the rest of our students have a little more than four weeks remaining in the school year. I’ve been in several classrooms this week and I’m so proud of the focus and effort our students continue to show. They're working hard to finish strong!
There are many exciting events coming up on campus, so please be sure to check the calendar regularly and stay in the loop. https://cshs.ccusd93.org/calendar
Seniors: Please pay close attention to all deadlines—this is a critical time and missing something could impact your end-of-year experience.
All students: Now is the time to connect with your teachers if you have any questions or concerns about grades. Don’t wait—be proactive and finish strong!
Finally, I have a small request: If you have any questions about what’s happening at Cactus Shadows, I encourage you to reach out to the school directly. While social media can be a quick and convenient way to share thoughts or ask questions—and you absolutely have every right to do so—it’s not always the most accurate or effective platform for school-related concerns. What often begins as a simple question can unintentionally lead to confusion, anxiety, or misinformation within our community.
We’re here to help, and I’m always happy to provide clarity about events, expectations, or anything else happening on campus. Cactus Shadows truly is a great place to be, and I’m sincerely grateful for your continued partnership.

Congratulations to Kaylee Rollins, ranked #6 in the state for soprano voice! This past weekend, she participated in the All-State Honor Music Festival at Northern Arizona University, where she performed with a choir of 206 talented musicians from across Arizona. In preparation for the festival, Kaylee memorized six songs—three in English, one in German, one in Latin, and one in Resian, a South African language.
This marks Kaylee’s third consecutive year auditioning for and earning a spot in this prestigious event. She spent three days in intense rehearsals, culminating in a stunning final performance on Saturday night.
The All-State Honor Festival of Performance for High School Musicians provides a unique opportunity for Arizona’s most gifted high school musicians to shine—and Kaylee certainly did just that.
We are so incredibly proud of you, Kaylee. Way to go!
Staff BBQ
The administration team at CSHS was hard at work behind the grill on Wednesday, serving up delicious cheeseburgers and hot dogs as a special thank you to our amazing teachers. Their time, effort, and grill skills were all on display as they showed appreciation for the hard work and dedication our staff pours into students each day. Thank you to our incredible Administration Team for making it a memorable lunch!
Mental Health Week
Mental Health Week is a fantastic event organized by our counseling department in collaboration with district school psychologist Beth Udisky. This week-long celebration is packed with engaging lunchtime activities designed to support students who may be experiencing anxiety or stress. It serves as an important reminder that no one is alone—help is always available, and leaning on each other matters. The event encourages positive thinking, kindness, and the importance of being a supportive role model. Our administration loves the chance to connect with students through these activities, reinforcing the sense of community on campus. Overall, Mental Health Week brings a fun and uplifting atmosphere that truly enhances our school culture. Huge thanks to the incredible team for doing such a great job making this event meaningful and impactful!

A Reminder for Student Drivers: Drive Safely!
As students come onto campus in the morning and head off campus at the end of their school day, we want to remind everyone to drive safely and be mindful of pedestrians. A community member recently shared concerns about student drivers speeding through the roundabout at 64th and Dove Valley, some not noticing pedestrians waiting to cross. They also mentioned that several students didn't notice them in the crosswalk because they were on their cell phones.
Many people—families with young children, cyclists, and older adults—use these crosswalks daily, and we all play a part in keeping our community safe. Parents, we appreciate your help in reminding students about safe driving habits, including following speed limits, staying off phones, and watching for pedestrians.
2025-2026 CSHS Student Parking
CSHS Families,
As you may have heard through the PTO parking spot auction letter, we are implementing a revised parking procedure for the 2025-2026 school year. We apologize for any confusion caused by the communication not coming directly from us first. Instead of assigned parking spots, students will now be designated to a specific parking lot. If you had a student who graduated before 2022, you might remember this was the system previously in place. There are three available lots: Main, West, and 56th St.
Parking Registration Dates:
- Seniors (Class of 2026): April 14, 2025
- Juniors (Class of 2027): May 5, 2025
Eligible students will receive an email through their school account with instructions. To complete the registration process, students must log in to their school email, fill out the online form, and upload the following documents:
- Completed parking application
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of insurance
- Vehicle registration
Once the application is approved, the parking fee will be added to the student’s account. The fee must be paid either online or at the bookstore before the student can receive their parking placard.
Why the Change?
We understand there are questions about the reasons behind this adjustment. The primary factors influencing this decision are:
- Budget Constraints: Currently, parking space numbers are not clearly visible, and the school does not have the funds to resurface the parking lots or repaint individual spot numbers.
- Tardiness Issues: This year, tardiness reached an all-time high, which created disruptions to classroom instruction and the overall school environment. We believe that unassigned spaces will encourage students to arrive earlier to secure their preferred spot, helping to reduce tardiness and improve punctuality.
- Incorrect Parking Assignments: When a student parks in the wrong spot, it often creates a chain reaction, causing confusion and delays for multiple students in the morning. This leads to frustration amongst students, parents, and contributes to tardiness as we work to resolve parking issues.
We recognize some concerns have been raised about potential congestion as students search for available spots. However, we believe this situation will be similar to the high-traffic patterns we experience in the afternoon when students are leaving campus.
PTO Fundraising Opportunity
For the 3rd year in a row, PTO is continuing their fundraising efforts and have been provided with 21 spots in the front row by the library entry. These spots are auctioned by the PTO, and the winners receive a reserved spot. This opportunity helps the PTO continue supporting our staff and classrooms every year. The good news is that you do not have to participate in the auction to secure a spot; we have plenty of parking available to our students. In fact, we typically have enough spots for sophomores once they receive their licenses.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we implement this updated parking procedure, which we believe will improve efficiency and minimize disruptions for both students and staff.
Sincerely,
CSHS Administration

Graduation Cords
Established service clubs and members of the various National Honor Societies will be permitted to wear their cords and stoles at graduation. Eligibility for these honors is determined by the club or organization sponsor, who is also responsible for ordering the cords and stoles. We have reached out to all club sponsors to collect a list of approved members, the names of students who have earned this recognition, and the specific color of the cord or stole they will be wearing. If there are any questions or concerns regarding eligibility or recognition items, please reach out directly to the appropriate club sponsor.
Please be advised: If your club is not on the approved list below, it means the club sponsor did not submit it for recognition. As a result, you will not be permitted to wear a non-approved cord or stole at graduation.

Counseling Department
We want to inform you of an important update regarding summer school courses through Primavera. Recent reports indicate that Primavera is at risk of losing its charter from the state of Arizona charter school board due to concerns about academic performance. If Primavera were to lose its accreditation while your student is enrolled in a class, we would be required to adhere to the guidance of the Arizona Department of Education regarding the acceptance of the credit.
Given this uncertainty, we strongly advise against enrolling in summer courses through Primavera. We encourage students to consult with their School Counselor for alternative options. If your student has already planned to take classes through Primavera, we highly recommend scheduling a meeting with their counselor to explore other suitable options. If your student chooses to stay enrolled at Primavera they may ONLY attend session 1 as session 2 extends into the start of our school year and CSHS students cannot be co-enrolled here and at a free charter school.
At CSHS, we remain committed to providing all students with a high-quality curriculum and instruction that supports their academic success.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Falcons-
We would like to remind you that next Tuesday, our 9th and 11th graders will be taking the ASPIRE and ACT assessments, respectively. It’s important for students to come prepared and ready to give their best effort! Meanwhile, our 10th and 12th graders will have an asynchronous learning day, so they can complete their assignments from home. Please see the additional details below for more information.
On another exciting note, our spring sports teams are performing wonderfully and have achieved some amazing records so far—go Falcons! We’re so proud of their hard work and dedication.
Looking ahead, Prom is just around the corner—next Saturday! If your student has not yet purchased their ticket, we highly encourage them to do so early in the week, as lines tend to get long closer to the event. Don’t forget to check that all fines and fees are paid in full, as this is required for ticket purchase.
Seniors, mark your calendars: Cap and gown pick-up will take place on Friday, April 11th. Please ensure that all fines and fees are settled beforehand to avoid any delays.
Lastly, a reminder that there will be no school on Friday, April 18th. We hope everyone enjoys the well-deserved break!
Thank you for your continued support as we finish out the school year strong.

Hello Falcons-
We had a fantastic first week after spring break, and it's hard to believe we’re in the final nine weeks of the school year. This is a busy and exciting time, and we’re here to support our students as we finish the final climb up the hill toward the finish line!
A huge shout-out to our incredible CSHS bands and Mr. Weingartner for their amazing outdoor concert last night. They took a creative risk by performing in our outdoor auditorium, and it was absolutely fantastic—congratulations to our talented musicians for the amazing show!
Spring sports are also in full swing, and there are plenty of opportunities to cheer on our Falcons. Check the link below for schedules and come out to support softball, baseball, boys' volleyball, tennis, and track.
For our seniors, I met with the entire class this week to go over graduation details, and all information is now posted on the school website. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with them!
As we move into testing season, our freshmen, juniors, and AP/IB students will be taking important exams. Please review the testing schedule in the newsletter below. Also, with just a few weeks left, it’s a great time to check in on academic progress—if your student needs extra support, encourage them to attend office hours and reach out to their teachers.
One last reminder—road construction may impact your morning commute, so please plan accordingly to ensure students arrive on time.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and let’s make these last nine weeks the best yet!

A Message From the Principal
Falcon Families,
What an incredible way to wrap up Quarter 3! A huge shoutout to StuCo for putting together an amazing Spirit Week, ending with an exciting Spring Rally and impressive Cactus Thunder with line dancing lessons, bull riding, and roping. Our Falcon pride was on full display, and it was a fantastic way to head into Spring Break!
To our students, staff, and families, thank you for your continued support. This semester has had its challenges, but through it all, our Falcon community has remained strong. Our teachers have continued to show up, inspire, and support our students, making sure that learning and growth remain at the heart of Cactus Shadows.
As we take this break, I encourage everyone to relax, recharge, and spend time doing what brings you joy. When students return we head into testing season.
We can’t wait to welcome everyone back on St. Patrick’s Day (3/17) to kick off the final stretch of the school year. Enjoy your break, Falcons!
We Are Falcons!

Your Words Matter- The Power of Social Media
Falcons-
Social media is a powerful tool especially when used for celebrating the incredible things happening at Cactus Shadows and recognizing the hard work of our students and teachers. We love seeing our community come together to support one another and showcase what makes CSHS and CCUSD such a great place.
However, we have also seen social media used to spread misinformation and create unnecessary division. Recently, an incident on campus was misrepresented online, leading to confusion and concern. When situations like this arise, we conduct a thorough investigation, which can take time. Every student involved has the right to due process, and privacy laws prevent us from sharing certain details. Additionally, sharing incomplete or unverified information before an investigation is concluded can create unnecessary anxiety and make it harder to reach the best resolution.
I understand that hearing about incidents through social media rather than directly from the school can be frustrating. Please know that we have protocols in place to ensure that when communication is necessary, it is accurate, complete, and appropriate for the situation.
As a community, I encourage all of us to be thoughtful and considerate about what we share online. Your words matter—what we say about students, teachers, and CCUSD staff has a real impact. Think about how you would feel if it were your name or your child’s situation being discussed online. Too many of us have been the target of hateful social media posts, and it is simply not okay. We are all working toward the same goal—to support and uplift our students—and it’s essential that we treat each other with kindness and respect, both in person and online; anonymity does not make it okay.
Before posting, I ask that we take a moment to consider the intent of the post and accuracy of the information we share. Misunderstandings can cause undue stress and negatively impact the students and staff who dedicate themselves to our school every day. If you ever have concerns, I encourage you to reach out directly, so we can provide accurate information and work together to support our students.
Our goal is always to have a positive and supportive school environment, and I appreciate your partnership in making Cactus Shadows a great place for all students and staff.
We ARE Falcons,
Mrs. Barela

FCCLA Culinary Competition
Ms. Helm’s Culinary FCCLA students had an incredible experience at the FCCLA competition this week in Tucson, showcasing their skills and dedication to the craft. Not only did they represent our school with pride, but they also achieved an outstanding accomplishment—every single student who attended brought home an award! This remarkable success is a testament to their hard work, talent, and the excellent guidance of Ms. Helm. Congratulations to all these outstanding chefs on their well-earned recognition. Go CTE Falcons!

Student Services and Testing
IMPORTANT: All state testing is now digital, making it essential for every student to come prepared. To ensure a smooth testing experience, ALL students must remember to bring a fully charged Chromebook with them on test days. A dead or forgotten device could cause unnecessary delays and complications, so it is crucial to charge Chromebooks the night before and double-check that they are ready to go. Being prepared will help students stay focused and perform their best without any technical disruptions.

A Message From the Principal
Dear Cactus Shadows Parents and Guardians,
We know there are still many questions following the Governing Board’s decision to close Desert Sun Academy while keeping Lone Mountain open. While we expect to have more information after Monday’s board meeting, we want to reassure you that our focus must remain on our students. As we navigate this transition, we must also be kind to one another—decisions like these are difficult for everyone. No decisions have been made regarding program changes at CSHS, and we will continue to provide strong learning opportunities to ensure our Falcons are ready to employ, enlist, or enroll. As soon as we have concrete updates, we will share them with you.
In the meantime, there’s a lot to celebrate! Our winter sports teams are making us proud—both boys' and girls' soccer and basketball are in the state playoffs, and several wrestlers will compete in the state championships this weekend. Spring sports are gearing up for their season, and Spirit Week kicks off the week of March 3rd, leading up to the Cactus Thunder rally on Friday, March 7th. State assessments are coming up in April, so please continue encouraging your students to be on time and do their best. And don’t forget—Spring Break is just two short weeks away!
Also, if you haven’t seen Grease yet, there are still five more chances! Catch it tonight or Saturday at 7 PM at the Fine Arts Center, or next week on 2/27, 2/28, and 3/1 at 7 PM. It’s a fantastic show, and our talented students would love your support!
Thank you for being part of our Falcon family—we appreciate you! Go Falcons!

Great job parents!!! Tardies have been better this month. In January we had an average of about (400) a week. In February we are only averaging about (275) a week! Please keep talking to your students about the importance of being on time to class. As a reminder…
As outlined in the Student Handbook 2024-2025:
"Tardies are considered a disruption to the classroom environment. Arriving late not only limits the learning time for tardy students but also disrupts the education of others. Students are expected to be on campus in time for the commencement of the school day. Students consistently arriving late to school may be subject to disciplinary action."
Students who have an unexcused tardy to class will receive the following consequences:
- 5th Tardy - Warning letter
- 8th Tardy - Lunch detention
- 10th Tardy - After school detention
- 15th Tardy - Saturday school
- 15+ Tardies - will be handled on a case by case basis with the AP

A Message From the Principal
Dear Cactus Shadows Community,
We’ve made it to February! Our students are now fully settled into the second semester and doing well. January was a busy month, filled with activities such as finalizing course requests for next school year, welcoming future Falcons at our Future Falcon Night, and celebrating at the Hoopcoming dance.
As we head into February, our winter sports teams are wrapping up their regular seasons, and we’ll soon find out where our Falcons stand for state playoffs. Tryouts for spring sports begin on Monday—good luck to all our athletes!
Tonight is the final performance of our Student Choreography Dance Recital at 7:30 PM in the Fine Arts Center. You can purchase tickets here, where you’ll also find tickets for our upcoming theatre production of Grease, running the last two weekends of February.
As a reminder, please continue encouraging your students to leave a few minutes early in the morning so they can arrive on time. Additionally, cell phones and earbuds are not permitted during class periods, and student IDs must be worn all day, every day. Thank you for helping us create the best possible learning environment for our students!
Have an amazing weekend, and don’t forget—there is no school on Monday, February 17th, in honor of Presidents' Day.

Graduation Fee for Class of 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2025,
As we prepare for an exciting and memorable graduation season, I would like to share important information about a new graduation fee introduced for this year’s senior class.
With rising costs affecting many areas, including those associated with graduation, we appreciate your understanding and support in ensuring we can provide a meaningful experience for all our students. Last year, the Governing Board approved a $60 graduation fee for the Class of 2025.
This fee applies to all graduating seniors, including those who choose not to participate in the ceremony, as it supports essential components of the graduation process. Payments can be made online or at the school bookstore, starting January 1, 2025. We kindly request that this fee be paid no later than April 9, 2025. If you need assistance, please contact your school counselor.
We value your partnership as we work to make this milestone special for the Class of 2025. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you for your continued support.
Attendance
There has been an increase in students leaving campus early without checking out through the office. Please remind your student of the importance of following proper procedures by signing out before leaving. Even if you have called the office to excuse their early departure, they must still sign out for the absence to be excused. Thank you for your cooperation!
Health Office Update
As we are currently in the midst of respiratory illness season, we kindly ask all parents to monitor their children for signs of illness. If your child is not feeling well, please keep them at home to help prevent the spread of illness. Common symptoms to watch for include: cough, runny nose, fever, and sore throat. In addition, please remind your child of the importance of frequent hand washing to help reduce the spread of germs. We also want to remind parents to be vigilant about lice. Lice can be active year-round, so we
encourage you to make checking for lice a regular part of your routine. For more information on how to treat lice, please refer to this link
Thank you for your continued efforts in helping to keep our school community safe and healthy.

A Message From the Principal
Happy Friday, Falcons!
We’ve had a fantastic start to the semester, and it’s hard to believe we’re already heading into week four of the second semester. On Wednesday, our teachers collaborated to share strategies for supporting reading across all content areas. These efforts are focused on helping students improve their reading stamina and test preparation for the ASPIRE and ACT assessments. This skill is not only crucial for testing but also for success in life.
In today’s fast-paced digital world, social media platforms like TikTok have made it easy for students to lose focus on critical reading and thinking skills. As we approach testing season over the next nine weeks, we encourage you to support your students by having them spend just 20 minutes a day reading. Building this habit can make a difference not only in their success with standardized testing but also after they leave CSHS, whether they employ, enlist, or enroll.
We also want to remind everyone about the importance of being on time to school. As the semester progresses, we’ve noticed the tardy line getting longer. Please help us support punctuality by encouraging your students to leave a little earlier in the morning and skip the Dutch Bros or Starbucks line if it might make them late. Arriving on time ensures they can start their day off on the right foot and fully engage in their classes.
Last night, we had the privilege of welcoming our future Falcons to campus! They experienced firsthand what makes Cactus Shadows such a special place. Our Student Council, clubs, athletics, and performing arts programs came together to showcase all that we offer, and it was a fantastic evening of celebration.
Have a wonderful weekend, and we’ll see you all on Monday!

Congratulations to our 2025 Valedictorian & Salutatorian!
Please join me in congratulating Lyla Strohman on being recognized as the Class of 2025 valedictorian! Lyla’s dedication to her studies has earned her this honor, and while she hasn’t yet decided where she will attend college, her passion for medicine and her dream of becoming a doctor who works with children are truly inspiring. We also celebrate Cole Kaminsky as the salutatorian for the Class of 2025. Cole’s commitment to academic excellence and his vision for a future in Urban Planning will undoubtedly lead him to great success. Congratulations to you both—your hard work and determination have paid off, and we are so proud of your accomplishments!-Principal Barela

We have spectacular news!
Our Falcon Abbey Gold has been selected as a Topical Winner.
Her poem will be included in the "My World" section of
our "American High School Poets" - Winter 2025 anthology.
The book My World will be available on Amazon.com starting January 20th. This anthology features introspective poems written by teenagers for teenagers, exploring their perspectives on moral and social issues. Less than 2% of submissions are selected for publication, emphasizing the exceptional quality and passion of the chosen works.
The organization highlights the importance of sharing poetry to foster understanding, share experiences, and build connections among young poets. For over 20 years, the sale of these anthologies has funded this platform, supported by volunteers who believe in its mission.
Scholarship winners for the quarter ending December 31 will be announced on the organization’s website by the end of January. Additionally, the founder, D. Edward Dieter, has a new poetry collection, Fossils, available on Amazon with sample pages to preview. Congratulations Abbey, we are so proud of you!

Why Being On Time Matters...
We are reaching out to address a growing concern regarding unexcused tardies. During the first week back after the holiday break, we recorded 392 unexcused tardies. The following week, this number increased to 469. Alarmingly, with only two days counted so far this week, we have already reached 320.
Arriving to school on time is crucial for your student's academic success and for maintaining a productive learning environment. We kindly ask that you speak with your student about the importance of punctuality and the impact it has on their education.
Your partnership and support in helping us address this matter are greatly appreciated. If there are any challenges preventing your student from arriving on time, please feel free to contact the school office for assistance.
Thank you for your continued commitment to your student’s success.

Why Being On Time Matters...
As an administration, we cannot stress enough the importance of being on time to school. Punctuality sets the tone for a productive day and ensures students remain on track with their academic responsibilities.
This week alone, we have recorded a total of 262 tardies during first hour, which is a significant disruption to both the tardy students and their classmates. We kindly ask for your assistance in reinforcing the importance of arriving to school on time.
Below, you will find our District’s Tardy Policy and Procedure, which outlines the consequences of excessive tardiness. We encourage you to review this with your student to help us minimize interruptions and support a strong learning environment.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Excessive Absence/Tardy Procedure
The school district expects parents/guardians to call the attendance office each day a student is absent from school. Reasonable attempts will be made by the school, through phone calls or letters, to inform parents/guardians of a student’s absence. This is a sincere attempt by the local school to work with the family in resolving a student’s attendance problem.
● When a student transfers from one school to another within the Cave Creek Unified School District, the student’s attendance record will transfer to the new school.
● Copies of the correspondence to parents/guardians will be distributed to appropriate school personnel.
● Excused absences due to school activities (athletics, field trips, performing groups, student government, etc.) are excluded from the attendance/tardy policy.
● Absences from scheduled classes as a result of on or off-campus suspensions will be included in the total number of absences for the semester in which the suspension occurs
Kiwanis Scholarship Information
We’re excited to share that our local Kiwanis group is offering over $500,000 in scholarships this year for high school seniors, with the majority of funds dedicated to students right here in the Cave Creek area! This is a tremendous opportunity for local students planning to pursue education after graduation, whether at a 4-year university, 2-year college, or trade school.
The application process is straightforward, and students can access the application at:
www.kiwanisscholarship.org
Here’s how it works:
- Students will create an account to begin the application.

Important Note: The link to the application will expire 30 days after the last save date. If this happens, students will need to start a new application, so we encourage them to plan accordingly.

A Message From the Principal
Dear Cactus Shadows Community,
As we wrap up the first semester, I want to take a moment to celebrate our students and the incredible memories we’ve created together throughout the first semester. From honoring cherished traditions to embracing new ones, our school community shined.
This semester was filled with amazing spirit weeks, awesome rallies, a memorable Homecoming, and an falcon awesome atmosphere at our home games—complete with the DJ that kept the energy high. The Nest was on fire for our fall sports and continues to show that same Falcon pride for winter sports.
Our fine arts programs showcased their talent in so many ways. From phenomenal productions like Into the Woods and CLUE, to incredible band and choir performances, our students’ dedication and artistry were on full display. We also saw their creativity shine through the beautifully crafted pumpkins and teacher portraits. And let’s not forget the performances from our band at football games, which helped bring our Falcon spirit to life all season long!
Every event, every achievement, and every performance reminded us that CSHS is truly a great place to be.
As we head into the break, I wish all of our students and families time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the things that bring you joy and make you feel loved. May your holidays be filled with happiness, and may the new year bring all you are hoping for.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday, January 6th, ready to kick off an amazing second semester.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Falcons!

Our Cactus Shadows Counseling team took a select group of Sophomore & Juniors to EVIT on Wednesday 12/11 to explore the various options of career/trade certificates that are offered through a hands on learning experience. Students got to choose between 4 grouped trades based on their interests and got a behind the scenes tour by EVIT students. Some of the highlights of the trip were getting to see the Medical Assisting students drawing blood, watching the Fire science student run drills fully suited, and get too close for comfort while the welding students were lighting up the scene working on local projects for the city. Overall, our student's could not wait to be get started at EVIT next school year. If your student is interested in the EVIT program, please have them reach out to our EVIT counselor Ms. Alicia Young for more information.

December 23rd-January 5th - Winter Break!
January 1st - Yearbooks are available to purchase. You can purchase them in the bookstore or online with the link. The price is $95.00 until the close out date. School code 16423 https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/index.cfm/job/16423%C2%A0
January 6th - School resumes. Second semester begins.
January 20th - MLK Day (NO SCHOOL)
News from the Attendance Office
As of December 18th, there have been 4,626 unexcused tardies during first hour alone. Each late arrival disrupts the learning environment and causes students to miss valuable instruction time, which can have a lasting impact on their success.
Our goal for next semester is to prioritize not only attending school but also arriving on time and ready to learn. We kindly ask for your support in reminding your student of the importance of punctuality and how it contributes to their overall academic success. Please read the tardy policy below.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us create an environment that fosters learning and growth.
Excessive Absence/Tardy Procedure • To prevent a student from unknowingly losing credit, the attendance office will correspond with the student and parents/guardians concerning the district attendance policy only on the first occurrence of the fifth (5th) absence and/or tardy in any class period during the semester. • Students who reach eight (8) absences and/or tardies in one or more class during any semester will be automatically placed on ACADEMIC PROBATION. Students will be removed from ACADEMIC PROBATION at the end of the current semester if they have ten (10) or fewer absences for the current semester. • Students will be notified that they have been placed on ACADEMIC PROBATION and the students will be given the written conditions of probation and a due process affidavit. • If the student remains in the class and has no further unapproved absences, and is not involved in disciplinary or disruptive behavior, and is passing the class in all respects, they may petition for credit. • In the case of prolonged absences (90 days) of a student from school, the principal will advise the student’s parents/guardians concerning the availability of teaching services for homebound students. The principal will determine each instance whether provisions for such services are appropriate. Loss of Credit High school students may lose credit for any class in which they accumulate 10 absences during a semester. The only exception to this rule will be when the administration decides that adequate evidence has been presented indicating an unusual circumstance, such as prolonged illness, requiring an accumulation beyond the maximum of 10 absences. Loss of Credit-Appeal Procedure An appeal procedure will be provided whereby a student may appeal the loss of credit for a course to principal or designee. It will be the responsibility of the student to present evidence to the principal or designee that would indicate that special circumstances existed to justify an exemption for the loss-of-credit policy

A Message From the Principal
With just two weeks left in the semester, the energy and excitement at Cactus Shadows High School are truly palpable! As we wrap up the year, it’s inspiring to see our community come together for so many meaningful causes. From Falcons generously volunteering their time to organizing and contributing to food, toy, and pet supply drives, the compassion and kindness of our school shine brightly this holiday season.
Today, we celebrated with our Winter Rally, a highlight of the semester! We recognized our incredible winter athletes, enjoyed fantastic performances from our choir, band, cheer, and pom teams, and cheered on some friendly class competitions. It was a fun-filled event and a perfect way to wrap up our Spirit Week while building excitement for the winter season ahead.
Our winter sports teams are kicking off their seasons, and we encourage everyone to come out and support our athletes as they proudly represent Falcon pride both on and off the field. We’ve also been treated to incredible performances from our performing arts programs. From band and choir concerts to a fantastic theater production, and tonight’s highly anticipated dance performance, we are surrounded by such remarkable talent!
As we embrace this special time of year, we hope the holiday season is filling you with all the “warm and fuzzies” it brings. While we enjoy the spirit of the season, let’s also remain focused on finishing the semester strong. Give your best effort each day and stay on track to achieve your goals. Don’t forget to review your second-semester schedule, and if you spot any errors or need adjustments, be sure to schedule an appointment with your counselor as soon as possible..
Together, we’ve got this! Let’s finish strong, Falcons.

A Message From the Principal
With just four weeks remaining until finals, now is a great time to check your student’s grades and reach out to teachers if you have any questions or concerns. Together, we can help our students finish the semester strong!
I also encourage you to review the final exam schedule, as exams cannot be administered early. To maintain a focused and uninterrupted testing environment, students will not be released from class early during final exams.
We also want to celebrate the success of our fall sports teams. Congratulations to Girls Golf, Cross Country, and Swim & Dive for their outstanding performances at state! Kudos to Girls Volleyball and Varsity Football as well, both of whom made it to the first round of the state playoffs. What a fantastic fall season!
Winter sports are already underway, with the regular season kicking off the week after Thanksgiving. We look forward to more exciting moments as our student-athletes compete and represent Cactus Shadows High School with pride.
As we continue through this busy time, we ask for your help in encouraging positive habits on campus. Please remind your students about the importance of:
- Keeping our bathrooms clean
- Picking up after themselves at lunch
- Arriving to school on time
These habits not only contribute to a better campus environment but also encourage responsibility that will serve them well beyond high school.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect and share something they are thankful for. Gratitude is powerful and helps build both connections and positivity. I also challenge our students to show their appreciation for our amazing teachers. Teaching is hard work, and every day, our teachers show up because they genuinely care about your students.
If you have a moment over the weekend, please encourage your student to write a thank-you note to one teacher or staff member they are thankful for, sharing why they appreciate them. It’s a small gesture with a big impact.
Your students are our why. Thank you, again, for sending us awesome kids and surrounding our school with support. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with this incredible community.
Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful Thanksgiving.

Falcon Celebrate
We are so proud of our Falcons! Please enjoy these pictures of our students who received the Student of the Month honors and the Carefree Cares Awards.
Thank you for celebrating their achievements with us!
Falcons Plan
- November 27th -29th - Thanksgiving Break (NO SCHOOL)
- On Thursday, December 5th, at 8:25 a.m., Cactus Shadows High School will conduct a Lockdown Drill as part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and preparedness. During this time, students will not be able to be signed in or out of the office until the drill is complete.
We want to ensure that our students understand the critical importance of these drills, both within and beyond the Cactus Shadows campus. Lockdown drills provide essential practice for responding calmly and effectively in case of emergencies. However, we’ve received feedback from many teachers that some students do not take these drills as seriously as they should.
We kindly ask for your support in emphasizing the importance of these drills. Before December 4th, please take a few moments to discuss with your students why practicing safety protocols is essential—for their own safety and for the safety of our entire community. Encourage them to approach the drill with the seriousness it deserves, as these skills could be vital in real-life situations both on the campus of Cactus Shadows and outside of campus, in their daily lives, as well.
Thank you for partnering with us to maintain a safe and secure environment for all Falcons. Your cooperation ensures that we are prepared to respond effectively in any situation. If you have any questions about the drill, please feel free to reach out
- Final exam days December 18th, 19th & 20th - To ensure all students have the best possible testing environment with minimal distractions, we will NOT be calling students out of classes for early release. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Bookstore Information
The bookstore will be open on November 25 but closed on November 26, with limited hours following Thanksgiving.
This adjustment is due to the current bookstore manager transitioning out of their role, and we are in the process of hiring a new manager.
If students have any immediate needs related to the bookstore, we encourage them to address those needs by the end of the day on November 25.
Thank you for your understanding and patience during this transition.
Falcon Parents, We Need Your Help!
We are reaching out to ask for your assistance in addressing ongoing vandalism in our school restrooms. Recently, there have been repeated incidents of students writing on walls, urinating on floors and toilet paper rolls, and clogging urinals with toilet paper.
Our night custodial team has had to repaint walls and perform deep cleanings of the same restrooms three nights in a row, which requires significant time, money, and resources. These efforts take away from other important tasks and put unnecessary strain on our staff.
Please talk to your students about the importance of respecting our shared spaces and taking care of school facilities. Remind them that their actions impact everyone in our community.
We greatly appreciate your support in helping maintain a clean and respectful environment for all students and staff. Thank you for your partnership in this matter!
Attendance Policy
- The right and privilege of attending public school carries with it certain responsibilities on the part of parents and students. High school attendance is ultimately the responsibility of the student and his/her family. It is important that parents and students recognize the direct relationship that exists between academic success and regular school attendance.
Definitions:
Absence - A student who arrives more than halfway into class is considered absent.
Excused absence - An absence is excused if a parent or guardian notifies the school within 24 hours. The reason for the absence must be given.
Off-Campus Pass - Generated by the front office staff allowing students to leave campus with parent/guardian permission. Students must sign out through the office in order for the absence(s) to be excused.
School-related absence - If a student misses class due to a pre-approved school-related activity, it will not count as an absence.
Suspension - The days of suspension do not count as absences for attendance policy.
Tardy - A student is tardy when s/he is not in class when the tardy bell rings.
Unexcused absence - Any absence that is not excused by a parent or guardian.
Absences
A student is allowed no more than 10 absences, excused or unexcused per class per semester. After the 11th total absence in a class, the student will be placed on no-credit status, but should continue going to class. If the student has communicated an extenuating circumstance, it is possible he/she will have the chance to appeal at the end of the semester. It is imperative to communicate with the Attendance office extenuating circumstances.
- HOW TO REPORT AN ABSENCE
Dial 480-575-2431 - After message and tone, please verbally state the following information:
- Spell the student’s last name, then give the first name
- The reason for the absence
- Your relationship to the student
- The recording already gives us the following information so you do not need to:
- Phone number
- Date
- Time
Please help us get your kids to school on time! Let’s finish this year off strong.
Tardies in 1st period this week:
- Monday we had (67)
- Tuesday was (91)
- Wednesday reached (104) - YIKES!
- Thursday we had (82)
To be on time, students need to be seated in class when the bell rings at 7:15 a.m. Walking through the gates at 7:15 means they are late.
Please help us reinforce the importance of arriving on time. Being punctual not only sets a positive tone for the day but also ensures uninterrupted learning for everyone.

Payments can be made online or at the school bookstore. We kindly request that this fee be paid no later than April 9, 2025. If you need assistance, please contact your school counselor.
We value your partnership as we work to make this milestone special for the Class of 2025. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you for your continued support.

A Message From the Principal
Cactus Shadows Community,
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out for Love Our Schools Day on November 2nd. Thanks to your efforts, we removed two dumpsters full of trash from our fieldhouse and campus! While we often ask for financial contributions, the gift of your time and hands-on support is equally valuable in helping us maintain a welcoming school environment for our students and teachers. Your willingness to step in—no matter what the need—makes CCUSD a truly special place. In the spirit of gratitude and in the season of giving thanks, I am profoundly thankful for a community that genuinely cares about Cactus Shadows High School, its students, teachers, and campus. Thank you for your dedication to our success and for being an essential part of what makes our school thrive.

A huge THANK YOU to our Key Club for stepping up and making a difference at the Barn Bash! You received a heartfelt thank you message from Horses Help, and it’s clear you truly made an impact. Here’s what they had to say:
"I just wanted to reach out and sincerely thank you and your team for the time and effort you all put into helping out for the Barn Bash. Their hard work really helped the night go smoothly (even if mother nature didn't want that for us ☔), we truly could not have put on such a great event without our amazing CSHS Key Club group! Your group's presence made the evening even more special for us here at Horses Help, so we can't say it enough...THANK YOU 🤠
We're hoping everyone had as wonderful a time with us as we did with them, so if anyone is interested in helping with future opportunities, just let me know! I would greatly appreciate if you could pass this along to the group as well - and special shout out to the 2 young ladies who stayed after to help us clean up; they're rock stars!"
Thank you, Key Club, for your hard work and dedication! You made us proud! 🌟
Mrs. Amanda Seaman - Math
Top Dual Enrollment Project: Amanda Seaman (MAT) Amanda is a Dual Enrollment Math Instructor at Cactus Shadows High School. Amanda decided to measure a course outcome from her calculus class, MAT211- Analyze the behavior and continuity of functions using limits. Amanda’s pretest was to give students different graphs, piecewise functions and questions relating to matching the graph with the algebraic interpretation, and answer. Students then needed to determine limits at a specific point domain value and as x approaches infinity. Amanda’s intervention was to provide a quick interactive Nearpod lesson where students would watch Amanda give an example. Students would duplicate a problem on the next slide to try to arrive at the correct answer. She then picked problems based on the one-sided limits and definition of continuity, which is where the students were struggling. Afterwards, Amanda’s results did show an improvement in homework scores that averaged 76% and test scores rose, averaging 88%. This improvement highlights Amanda’s focused intervention method designed to help students understand a key course outcome, preparing students for the next sequence of classes. Awesome!
Attendance Is Essential!
Regular attendance is the key to much of the success a student may gain from his/her school program. Students would remain out of school only when absolutely necessary, as much of the classroom activity cannot be made up. The benefit of lectures, discussion, and participation is lost forever to those who are absent. A doctor’s verification will be requested for excessive illness-related absences. All absences in excess of a cumulative 10% of the instructional days for the school year shall be reported to AZ Department of Education as unexcused.
Parent Notification
Parents will be contacted (by the auto dialer system) for all daily absences.
Excessive Absence/Tardy Procedures
● Students who reach eight (8) absences and/or tardies in one or more classes during any semester will be automatically placed on an attendance contract.
● When a student has reached (10) absences they will be given an NC (no credit) in their class.
● If the student remains in the class and has no further unapproved absences, and is not involved in disciplinary or disruptive behavior, and is passing the class in all respects, he/she may petition for credit.
Loss Of Credit
(REF: Board Policy JH-R)
High school students may lose credit for any class in which they accumulate ten (10) absences during a semester. This accumulation includes excused and unexcused. The only exception to this rule will be when the administration decides that adequate evidence has been presented indicating an unusual circumstance, such as prolonged illness, requiring an accumulation beyond the maximum of ten (10) absences.

October Athletes Of The Month
Congratulations to Katie Rhude, Girls Golf and Jack Zandbergen for being selected for our October Athletes of the Month! Read what their coaches have to say about them below. We are Falcon Proud!
From Coach Taylor: Jack, a four-year member of the golf team, through hard work and discipline, has become a staple of the team. He earned his first medalist honor this season and accomplished it two more times. Not only that, he has been a model of consistency with his play. HIs game has truly developed into a tremendous contributor on the course. Perhaps his most important contribution has been as a friend and role model to his teammates. Jack displays just the right balance of fire and competitiveness with his desire to see his teammates improve as well. He is an exceptional young man and golfer, worthy of consideration for Athlete of the Month
From Coach MOB: Katie returned to CSHS for her Senior year after playing for us when she was a Freshman. She was the only player to finish in the top 10 individually on our 2024 State Championship team. This was our school’s 9th title, second in Arizona only to Xavier. She was an awesome teammate as well. She was the last player on the course and preserved our 1 shot victory!

Parent & Community Forum: Teen Dating Violence
Crystal Kazik spoke to parents from New Life Center on teen dating violence and sextortion. She emphasized the importance of recognizing early warning signs of abuse and exploitation in teen relationships, both online and offline.
Teen Dating Violence: Signs of dating violence often include behaviors where one partner tries to control or manipulate the other, such as isolating them from friends or family, being overly jealous, making decisions for them, or resorting to physical or emotional intimidation. Teens in such relationships may feel scared, isolated, or pressured into doing things they’re uncomfortable with. Healthy relationships, on the other hand, are marked by mutual respect, good communication, and maintaining individuality.
Sextortion: Is a form of exploitation where online predators (or significant others) trick teens into sharing explicit content, often by pretending to be someone else. Once they obtain compromising material, they blackmail the victim for more content or money, using threats to ruin their reputation or harm them emotionally. Sextortion has become increasingly common, and many cases remain unreported due to embarrassment or fear. It’s essential for teens to understand the dangers of interacting with strangers online and for parents to have open conversations with them about internet safety.
All of the parent forums have many overlaps that include social media, mental health and substance use.

A Message From the Principal
We’ve had an outstanding week at Cactus Shadows High School following fall break, and the next 10 weeks of the semester are sure to fly by. This week, many of our sophomores and several juniors took the PSAT, which offers an excellent opportunity to prepare for the SAT they’ll take in their junior year. For juniors, it also opens the door to potential National Merit recognition.
Next week, Falcons Hit the Road for Homecoming! Our CSHS Student Council has done a fantastic job organizing the week's activities. We encourage everyone to join in the dress-up days, and we invite parents to watch the Homecoming parade on Friday at 9 a.m. in the Fine Arts Center parking lot, followed by the assembly on the football field. Friday’s game will be packed with exciting events, including honors, recognitions, and Homecoming festivities. If you are or know a CSHS alum, please encourage them to attend the game and sign in at the alumni table to be recognized.
Our Falcons continue to work hard and give their best, making CSHS a truly exceptional place. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing you next week as we Hit the Road!

Cactus Shadows has been named to the AP Honor Roll for the 23-24 school year!
The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
For a school to be recognized on the AP School Honor Roll in a given year, it must:
Meet each of the following criteria for their students in the most recent graduating class; these criteria are anchored in research-based relationships between AP and college outcomes:
- College Culture: 40% or more of the graduating cohort took at least 1 AP Exam during high school. CSHS had 54%.
- College Credit: 25% or more of the graduating cohort scored a 3 or higher on at least 1 AP Exam during high school. CSHS had 36%.
- College Optimization: 2% or more of the graduating cohort took 5 or more AP Exams during high school. At least 1 of those exams was taken in 9th or 10th grade, so that students are spreading their AP experience across grades rather than feeling disproportionate pressure in any single year. CSHS had 13%.
As pictured L-R: Audrey Chapman, Megan Swansiger, Darrell Doepke
Megan and Audrey designed artwork for a benefit that Mr. Doepke is hosting at Harold's in Cave Creek. Both girls were awarded a monetary gift for their work. The designs will be used for a cornhole game and a golf (putting) game at his event.

A Message From the Principal
Hey Falcons!
Can you believe it? We’ve already wrapped up the first quarter of the 2024-2025 school year, and now it’s time for Fall Break!
Parents, as we look ahead to Quarter 2 (which will zoom by before we know it), I hope everyone takes this time to decompress, destress, and recharge. This is a great opportunity for our students to relax and reset, so they can come back refreshed and ready to tackle the next part of the school year.
Enjoy the break, and we’ll see you on October 7th.
We Are Falcons!

Falcons Plan
- Fall Break - No school September 30th - October 4th.
Student IDs' On Campus
As we approach fall break, I know we're all excited for some well-deserved rest. Before we go, I wanted to send a quick reminder to talk with your student about the importance of wearing their school IDs.
We’ve all worked hard this first quarter to make wearing IDs part of the routine for both students and staff, and it's essential that we continue this practice when we return from break. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and wearing IDs allows us to easily identify who should and shouldn’t be on campus.
Please remind your student that when they return to campus on 10/7, IDs must be worn around their necks at all times during the school day. Let’s keep the great habits we’ve built going strong!
Thank you for your support and have a wonderful fall break!
Attendance Matters!
CSHS students were absent a total of 1,418 days in August and a total of 1,396 days in September. Falcons, let ‘s try to get under 1,000 for October (it's a week shorter)!
Did you know that missing just two days of school per month means a child misses 10% of the school year?
Research shows there is a direct relationship between student achievement and absences. In Cave Creek Unified, our goal is to partner with families to make sure students are in school.
What you can do:
-
Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day
-
Help your student maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep
-
Try not to schedule appointments during the school day
-
If your student must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up fo the missed learning time in the classroom.
-
Check your student’s attendance on Power School to be sure absences are not adding up.
Student Event Conduct
Hey Falcons!
Just a quick reminder from the CSHS Administration: whether you're at a dance, football game, theater performance, or any other school event, our school rules still apply.
These events are all about having fun and making great memories, so let's keep them safe for everyone. Remember, bringing or using inappropriate substances is not allowed, and any student under the influence will face the same consequences as during the school day.
Also, a lot of families, including younger kids, come out to enjoy our events too. Let’s show them how awesome our Falcon community is by keeping things positive and respectful.
Thanks for your help in making every event great!

Important Reminder About Safe Driving
Keeping our students safe is always our top priority, both on and off campus. We want to remind everyone about the importance of driving safely and responsibly, especially around our school.
Reckless driving is extremely dangerous and can result in severe consequences. Please have a discussion with your student about following the speed limit, being cautious around pedestrians, and taking their time when driving.
Additionally, we have police officers who regularly patrol both our campus and the surrounding areas. They will pull over and ticket anyone driving recklessly, and in serious cases, there is a risk of arrest. We absolutely do not want this for any of our students.
Please remember: safe driving helps protect everyone. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.

A Message From the Principal
Hello Falcons!
The last couple of weeks at CSHS have been incredible! As school, sports, clubs, and the fine arts are now in full swing, we’ve had the chance to see the amazing talents of our students both inside and outside the classroom. There’s truly something for everyone here, and we are so proud of all our students.
As we approach the week before Fall Break, please take a moment to check in with your students and their grades. The first quarter of the semester ends on Friday, 9/27. Our teachers are committed to helping all students succeed, so feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
This year, the CSHS administrative team has implemented a policy requiring students to wear their IDs on their lanyards throughout the day. This helps our staff ensure that everyone on campus belongs here. Moving forward, students without their IDs will be issued consequences, starting with lunch or Wednesday detention, and escalating with repeated infractions. Please help us reinforce this at home. Students without an ID will need to purchase a replacement for $5, as IDs are required to be on campus.
After Fall Break, we’ll have just one week before we “Hit the Road” for Homecoming! To ensure students can purchase their Homecoming tickets, please make sure all class fees and fines are paid, as students must have no outstanding debts. Guest passes for the dance can be picked up in the front office and are due by Wednesday, October 16th. Ticket sales end on Friday, October 18th at 3:00 p.m., and tickets will not be sold at the door. Encourage your students to get involved in Homecoming week, which includes fun activities like dress-up days, the feast and powder puff game on 10/15, the parade, the assembly, Friday night’s game, and of course, the dance.
Watching our seniors at Senior Sunrise this morning and seeing the excitement of all our students at the Big Blue Pep Rally today reminds me—and our staff—how fortunate we are to have such amazing students who love being Falcons.

This is a great opportunity to show off your creativity and make lasting memories with your student.
Each float will be judged in a class competition for a chance to win half-off tickets to the Winter Formal (Hoopcoming), the Spirit Stick, and of course, bragging rights!
Below is the timeline for our float build:

Hope to see you there!

A Fun and Creative Day for Our Seniors!
We wanted to take a moment to share a wonderful experience the English 101 students had in class. This group of bright and unique individuals has been working hard, dedicating the past few weeks to pushing their writing skills to the next level. It’s always inspiring to see their determination and growth!
Today, they added a creative twist. While listening to an engaging piece of writing, the Seniors had the opportunity to tap into their creativity—using Play-Doh! It was such a refreshing and fun activity that brought out their imagination and made for an enjoyable, memorable day for everyone involved.
As we know, learning should always be rigorous, but it can also be fun and playful at times. We believe this was a perfect blend of both.

Why is it important to take rigorous courses like physics?
Colleagues: A question came up on the Tucson Alliance of Physics Teachers (TAPT) listserv. Some high schoolers don't see any point in taking physics, if they don't intend to major in physics in college. High school physics is optional, for college entrance. Thus I asked Joe Foy of the ASU Barrett Honors College to reply with a statement that I can post. The question is: for students who don't plan to major in physics, to what extent does taking high school PHYSICS give Barrett College applicants an advantage over applicants who don't take it?
Response: There is no magic admission committee number or score anyone on the admission committees attaches specifically to physics or any other course. However, we at Barrett agree that physics, particularly AP physics, is among the most intellectually rigorous high school courses a student can take. We on the admission committee carefully review an applicant’s high school transcript not merely for grades but to see what courses the applicant took in high school. Taking challenging courses like AP physics weighs heavily in an applicant’s favor.
Those not planning to major in physics may wish to know the benefits of this challenging course. For one, it is the foundational science for other branches of science. Chemistry, astronomy, and even biology are subjects that build on physics. A mastery of physics can be highly useful to future engineers, chemists, chemical engineers, biologists, and bioengineers. Second, physics introduces students to logical and empirical interrogations of nature that serve as a valuable model for approaching any subject. Perhaps it is unsurprising that the great philosopher Immanuel Kant began his career as a physicist before turning to philosophy!
Thirdly, the study of physics itself offers genuine intellectual and cultural benefits. The attempt to understand the fundamental laws of nature has influenced philosophy, literature, music, and art in both obvious and subtle ways. For instance, the work of Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton strongly impacted Enlightenment-era thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Voltaire, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant. Even Jonathan Swift’s satire of Newton and the Royal Society in the “Flying Island of Laputa” episode from Gulliver’s Travels is a testament to the cultural impact of physics.
As a member of the Barrett Admissions Committee, I actively look for signs of an applicant’s intellectual curiosity and willingness to take risks. I am more impressed by someone earning a “B” in physics or a demanding literature course than an “A” in a less rigorous course. This is because these qualities often indicate a student's potential for growth and success in college and beyond.
Sincerely, J.P. Foy

This year, we will be notifying you each time we conduct a drill on campus. Not only does this keep you informed about what is happening, but it also helps us train and prepare our students and staff by practicing procedures in case a real emergency occurs.
Below are the different drills we will be practicing this year. These procedures have been taught to all of our students:
-
Hold: Students and staff remain in classrooms, out of access areas, while teachers continue teaching.
- Why would we have a hold? A medical emergency or a fight on campus.
-
Secure: Everyone moves into classrooms or buildings, and exterior access points are locked. Teachers continue teaching, and students may or may not transition between classes, depending on the situation.
- Why would we secure campus? Criminal activity in the neighborhood or a dangerous animal on campus.
-
Evacuate: Students and staff move from one location to another for safety.
- Why would we evacuate? Fire, mechanical failure, gas leak, or bomb threat.
-
Shelter: Students and staff remain in classrooms and prepare for further instructions.
- Why shelter? Severe weather or a hazardous materials situation.
-
Lockdown: All doors are locked, windows are covered, and everyone remains quiet.
- Why lockdown? A threat or hazard inside the school, or an act of violence on campus.

A Message From the Principal
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and had a chance to relax and recharge. In honor of Labor Day this week, I want to recognize our public schools as they are filled with some of the most dedicated professionals: teachers, administrators, counselors, support staff, custodians, and teacher aides. They work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and even during the summer, to ensure our students receive the education and life skills they need to succeed. So, a huge thank you to our staff.
Next, I want to share that our fall sports are off to a great start! One of the things that makes Cactus Shadows High School so special, and one of the best high schools in the state, is the support of our community. I encourage everyone to come out and watch a game. Whether it’s golf, swim, cross-country, volleyball, or football, attending these events creates a positive experience, supports our students, and builds our sense of community and school pride.
As we continue to move through the first semester, ! I encourage students and parents to regularly check their Parent and Student accounts on PowerSchool to stay updated on grades. Teachers are expected to update their gradebooks regularly, and students should have an average of two assignments per week. With the end of the first quarter approaching on September 27th, now is the time to stay on top of progress so our amazing teachers can provide the necessary support to help students succeed.
In closing, I want to reiterate a key expectation that our administrative team shared with students at the start of the year and ask for your support. We told our students that at CSHS, we expect the Golden Rule to apply in everything they do—treat others the way you want to be treated. This expectation applies to everyone on our campus. Additionally, we’ve implemented a no cell phone policy during class to increase student engagement, enhance learning, and support student mental health by reducing social media distractions.
My ask of you is to support this effort, particularly when it comes to social media. CSHS is an amazing school with incredible students and exceptional teachers, all of whom come in every day to do their best for our students. Social media can be a powerful tool to either build up or tear down. I ask that you, like our students, use it to promote positivity and community. Social media posts can have a profound impact on children, teens, and adults, so let’s use it for good—supporting CSHS and CCUSD in meaningful ways.
If you have any concerns, I encourage you to reach out to me or my administrative team directly. Let’s continue to celebrate the amazing things our students are doing, the powerful lessons our teachers are teaching, and the exceptional experience it is to be a CSHS Falcon!

August Athletes of the Month
Congratulations to Logan Anderson, XC and Tatum Nelson, XC for being awarded our August athletes of the month! Each month, a coach nominates a male and female for athlete. Their nominations are then sent out to all CSHS staff to cast the final vote. Check out what coach Powell had to say...
"Logan has shown a focus and work ethic through August and the summer that laid a base for a successful start to his XC season. Logan shows up everyday ready to work with a positive focused attitude. Logans was the XC team's Falcons Of The Week for the week of 8/24. At the Duel in the Desert Logan's work was made apparent as he ran a new personal best time of 21:29. His previous time from last season was 23:55.5. That shows his hard work paying off!"
"Tatum is one of our top runners, if not the top. She has her goals defined and is doing the work to achieve them. She leads the team by example through her positive attitude and relentless work ethic. Tatum dedicated herself to her team and her craft throughout the summer. She ran 315 miles; in the heat, on vacation, and even at times twice a day."

Calendar Survey
CCUSD Families- We value your feedback! Thank you to all of you who have already completed the calendar survey that was emailed and text messaged to you on Wednesday, September 4. If you have not already completed it, please click here to give us your feedback. You will need your student's ID number. The survey closes on Wednesday, September 11. You can submit one survey per student.
Parent Calendar Survey
Every three years, the Cave Creek Unified School District reviews the current calendar and researches other calendar concepts to benefit our students and school community. We are currently exploring three different calendar concepts that each have unique benefits for our students and community. At this time, no decision has been made. We know that the school calendar affects our employees and your feedback is important. Please read each of the descriptions below, and rate them on how well they support your family’s needs. The survey will be open September 4-11. The innovative calendar focus group, composed of CCUSD parents and CCUSD employees, will review responses to guide their next steps in creating a viable calendar for the next three years. CCUSD Leadership will propose a calendar to the Governing Board in November so that you can plan for the upcoming school years.
Please note:
-
All of the calendar concepts will adhere to the state-required number of student instructional minutes per school year.
-
CCUSD will continue to offer affordable, high-quality child care for working parents during days off or extended breaks.
-
The survey is not anonymous because we only want feedback from families of current students at this time. Please complete no more than one survey per CCUSD student.

A Message From the Principal
Dear Falcon Families,
As we wrap up the third week of school, I want to thank all our parents and guardians who attended our “Meet the Teacher” night. It was wonderful to see so many of you connecting with our incredible staff. For those who were unable to attend, please know that our teachers are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to reach out to them via email, and you should expect a response within 24 hours during school days.
We would also like to extend our thanks to the Scottsdale Police Department for taking the time to familiarize themselves with our facility, ensuring that they can respond even faster in case of an emergency. We were also incredibly proud of how our students and staff handled a recent medical emergency, where a hold was placed on campus. Everyone did exactly what they were trained to do, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during that time.
Finally, thank you for the generous donations we’ve seen for student classrooms over the past three weeks! Your contributions make a huge difference. With the end of quarter one just four weeks away, please reach out to your student's teachers or counselors if they are struggling with academics—support is available.
To further support our fantastic teachers, we are requesting gift card donations in any increment, which will be used as raffle prizes for staff who participate in spirit days and competitions. Any contribution is greatly appreciated and goes a long way in boosting morale and fostering a positive school spirit.
A few reminders as we move forward: Our dress code is being enforced to help maintain a respectful and focused learning environment. Additionally, in order to ensure the safety of our campus, students must wear their IDs around their necks at all times during the school day. Students without their IDs are being sent to the office for a replacement, at the cost of $5 per day.
It has been an amazing start to the school year, and I know it’s because of the dedication of our CSHS staff and the strong, supportive community we serve.
Thank you for being a vital part of our Falcon family!

Attendance
Consistent attendance is crucial for several key reasons. First and foremost, it guarantees that students receive a well-structured and comprehensive education. By attending regularly, students gain full access to our unique and diverse curriculum, equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for both personal and professional growth. Additionally, being at school promotes social interaction and the development of vital life skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Regular attendance allows students to engage with their peers, learn from varied perspectives, and cultivate the interpersonal skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
During the first week of school, we had 143 students absent, and that number increased to 270 in the second week. Let’s all work together to reduce these numbers. Please take a moment to review our new school board policy on absences.
Loss Of Credit
High school students may lose credit for any class in which they accumulate ten (10) absences during a semester. This accumulation includes excused and unexcused. The only exception to this rule will be when the administration decides that adequate evidence has been presented indicating an unusual circumstance, such as prolonged illness, requiring an accumulation beyond the maximum of ten (10) absences.
Tardies
Tardies are considered a disruption to the classroom environment. Arriving late not only limits the learning time for tardy students but also disrupts the education of others. Students are expected to be on campus in time for the commencement of the school day. Any student arriving late for the first scheduled class should proceed directly to the office for a pass to be admitted to class. Students consistently arriving late to school may be subject to disciplinary action.
Disciplinary actions for tardies will be implemented as follows:
-
(5) Tardies: Warning
-
(8) Tardies: Lunch detention for one day
-
(10) Tardies: After school detention for one day
-
(15) Tardies: Saturday school
-
(15+) Tardies: will be handled on a case by case basis by the AP
In the first week of school we had 117 students tardy to their classes, by the second week that number was up to 316. That is 316 interruptions to your child's learning environment. Please talk to your students about the importance of being on time.
Focus Groups
We currently have two Focus Groups meeting on our next calendar cycle and on facilities.
The CCUSD Calendar Focus Group, composed of parents, teachers, and administrators has been meeting since May to discuss the next 3-year cycle for the academic calendar. The group is being facilitated by Dr. Patty Jensen, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. The purpose of this group is to explore possibilities and provide recommendations to CCUSD leadership on our calendars. The two priorities they are basing their decisions to make any recommendations are that:
-
It has to be in the best interest of our students, and
-
It has to promote financial stability and sustainability for the District
This group will be sending a survey to parents in the coming weeks to gather parent input regarding 3 different calendar concepts: two 5-day/week calendars that feature early release day Wednesdays, and a 4-day/week with no early release days. Be on the lookout for this survey September 4-11. District leadership expects to present a final calendar based on the focus group’s recommendations for approval by the Governing Board by December.
The CCUSD Facility Focus Group, composed of parents, teachers, administrators, and community members, is currently in the exploratory phase, reviewing critical data regarding district enrollment trends, building capacities, and life cycles. The group is being facilitated by Dr. Frank Hendricsen, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. The purpose of this group is to explore possibilities and provide recommendations to CCUSD leadership on our District-wide facility usage. The two priorities they are basing their decisions to make any recommendations are that:
-
It has to be in the best interest of our students, and
-
It has to promote financial stability and sustainability for the District
The group recently met with the district demographer and a facility management consultant to analyze current district enrollment and other essential data. The Facility Focus Group’s recommendations will be presented to district leadership, who will work through and present final recommendations to the CCUSD Governing Board.

As we head into week two, please be aware that the dress code and ID policy will be enforced. For more details, see the information below. Here's to a great school year!

Our bi-monthly newsletter will begin on Friday, August 2nd.
Looking forward to a fantastic school year!

Meet Our New Assistant Principals!
Cactus Shadows is pleased to welcome two new Assistant Principals to the Falcon Family! Learn more about our administration team on the Administration page.

Robert Gilmore
My name is Rob Gilmore, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to an exciting school year at Cactus Shadows High School! I am honored to serve as your Assistant Principal (Athletic Director, and Exceptional Student Services).
A bit about myself: I grew up in the vibrant city of San Jose, California, and am a proud graduate of San Jose State University (Go Spartans!). With a passion for education and a dedication to student success, I spent 20 years teaching Special Education at the high school level while also coaching football and wrestling. These experiences have deeply enriched my understanding of both academics and athletics.
My journey led me from public education to private school administration, where I specialized in supporting students with autism. Additionally, I have had the privilege of serving as an AIA football referee for the past 8 years, further fueling my passion for sports and fair play.
Last year, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach at Cactus Shadows. The experience was so rewarding and fulfilling that I knew I had to stay. The sense of community, the dedication of our staff, and the enthusiasm of our students make Cactus Shadows a truly special place.
As we embark on this new school year, I am eager to support all our students in achieving their academic and athletic goals. Together, we will continue to foster an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
Thank you for welcoming me into this amazing community. I look forward to working with each of you and contributing to the continued success of Cactus Shadows. Go Falcons!

Robert Morgan
My name is Robert Morgan, and I have six years of experience in education, all in Arizona, which has led me to Cactus Shadows. I started in the Glendale Elementary District, teaching Social Studies and Writing for three years. I then taught Social Studies and served as the Athletic Coordinator in DVUSD for three more years. In both districts, I held various leadership roles to help guide my campus towards student growth and improving the culture and climate.
I grew up in Oregon as a three-sport athlete and received a scholarship to play football at the University of Arizona. During my time there, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. I then attended Grand Canyon University to receive my Master of Arts in Social Studies. After four years of teaching, I returned to Grand Canyon University to earn my Master of Education in Educational Administration.
Combining my experiences in athletics and my educational career, I pride myself on working towards a common goal and uplifting those around me to realize their full potential. This mentality is inspired by my wife of six years and my very energetic daughter. My wife played softball at the University of Arizona and is my support system through all challenges in life. As a family, we enjoy the outdoors, being involved in athletics, and being surrounded by family. I am also involved in travel softball, which I help coach with my wife, and I take my skills from education and athletics to help uplift those girls to reach their full athletic potential.
First Day of School
Monday, August 5, 2024
We encourage you to continue checking your email for updates. You will receive more information about Chromebook checkout forms, insurance, and instructions on making your course fee payments online. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Update PowerSchool
If you haven't done so, now is the time to update PowerSchool! Student updates this year are more streamlined as all forms can be completed through PowerSchool (either using the Mobile App, or by logging in via browser). These updates are especially important for high school students as the Chromebook Agreement Form must be completed before students will be able to pick up their Chromebooks. Forms must be completed for each student. If you do not have a PowerSchool account, are having trouble, or have questions, please email: powerschool@ccusd93.net
Chromebook Pickup for EVIT
If you missed the Chromebook pick-up on Monday, 7/22, Tuesday, 7/23, or Wednesday, 7/24, please contact the school office to arrange an alternate pick-up time. Please note that EVIT classes began on Wednesday. Only enrolled EVIT students are eligible to pick up their Chromebooks.
Additionally, students who are enrolled in EVIT may pick up their parking placard on Monday, 7/29, before the EVIT bus leaves. Please click here for additional parking information.
Schedule Needs
Cell Phone Expectations
Students will be expected to "park" their cell phones during their classes. Students may use their devices during passing periods and lunch time. Wireless earbuds are not permitted during the school day--including passing periods.
Attendance
Student Parking 2024/2025
As part of a new parking permit process this year, emails were sent to student email accounts with links to submit all required paperwork. Please contact Dawn Riolo if you need the email to be resent.
Placard Pick Up
To minimize your trips to campus during the final weeks of summer, we have scheduled placard pickup alongside Chromebook distribution times and Falcon Prep. We will not be using a Signup Genius as previously communicated. Chromebook pick up will be in the library and parking placard pick up will be in the main office. Please refer here for the flyer for the specific dates and times, the make up date is here.
Evit Students: Please stop into the main office anytime before Evit the week of July 29th to collect your pass. While CSHS is still on summer recess, you may park anywhere in the student lot. When school resumes, you must park in your assigned parking space.
If your student still needs to register for parking, please have them check their student email for the Google Form link to upload the required documents.
Please note that, for security reasons, parking assignments cannot be provided before placard pickup.
Drop off and Pick up Procedures
Staff Parking Lot (Drop-Off)
Due to the increase in new drivers and the necessity for students to be in class on time, we kindly ask that you refrain from dropping off or parking in the student lot in the morning. Please use our staff lot to drop off your student. Kindly wait in line to circle through and pull all the way forward when waiting for drop-off.
Staff & Senior Parking Lot (Pick-Up)
Pick-up can be done in either the staff lot or the senior lot. You may park in an open space while you wait for your student in the afternoon, similar to a cell phone lot at the airport. If you choose to pick up in the staff lot, we ask that you do not park in the staff spaces or wait between the lanes. Please wait in line to circle through and pull all the way forward when waiting for pick-up.
DUE TO VENDOR DELIVERIES AND PARENTS COMING ON CAMPUS FOR MEETINGS, WE ASK THAT THE ROUNDABOUT NEVER BE USED FOR PICK-UP OR DROP-OFF
Supply List
During the first week back students will receive a syllabus from each of their classes which will contain a list of required supplies. For the first day of school, bring:
- a writing utensil
- a notebook
- wired headphones for their Chromebook
- their fully-charged Chromebook
Dress Code
It is expected that students adhere to the dress code outlined in the student handbook. To view a copy of the dress code policy please click this link to the 24-25 student handbook, and scroll to page 35. Students who violate the dress code will be required to change clothes or be picked up by a parent.
Lunch
Lunch will be served in the cafeteria (hot lunch/salad bar). Students will use their school issued ID to pay for hot lunch. Please click HERE to add money to pay for school lunches. During lunch students can sit and enjoy lunch either in the cafeteria or outside in the courtyard at the ramadas and tables provided. Students at lunch are not permitted inside the buildings unless they are meeting for a club or have teacher permission. This helps minimize disruptions and ensures the safety of all students on campus. We are a closed campus, students are not permitted to leave for lunch.
Picture Day
Dorian Photography will be on campus Friday, August 9th, to take pictures for students in grades 9-12. Students will go with their English classes to take their photos. Seniors will have their pictures done for their school IDs then again for the yearbook. Students must follow the dress code. Please use this link to pre-order pictures. Once students have their IDs it is an expectation that they wear them all day everyday to help ensure the safety of the campus.
